Chapter 6. Cattle (Al-An‘ām) الانعام

In the Name of Allah—the Most Compassionate, Most Merciful

Chapter 6. Cattle (Al-An‘ām) الانعام

A Brief Introduction

Like the preceding surah, this Meccan revelation beautifully bears witness to the boundless power and perfect knowledge of Allah. It lovingly yet firmly dispels pagan beliefs and baseless customs, including the practice of offering animals to idols. Moreover, permissible and prohibited foods are explained in more detail. Besides, it also tenderly clarifies the true nature of prophethood, reminding us that the messengers act only by the Will of Allah and possess no power of their own. The surah opens by affirming Allah’s supreme authority, echoing the conclusion of the previous surah, and closes with a solemn reminder of accountability for one’s deeds, harmonizing beautifully with the opening message of the surah that follows.

Main Themes (Summary)

All praise belongs to Allah, the Creator of the heavens and the earth, the Originator of light and darkness; yet, some still turn away and set others equal to Him. He created humanity from clay, appointed a fixed term for life and another known only to Him for resurrection, though many continue to doubt. Allah alone is the True God in the heavens and the earth; He knows all that is hidden and revealed, and every deed we do.

Despite receiving clear signs from their Lord, people often turn away and reject the truth, mocking it; yet such denial carries consequences. History bears witness to nations before them who were blessed with strength, rain, and flowing rivers, but were destroyed for their sins and replaced by others. This stands as a gentle yet powerful reminder to reflect, believe, and remain mindful of Allah’s guidance and accountability.

Even if a written revelation were sent down for the Prophet ﷺ and touched by their own hands, the disbelievers would still dismiss it as magic. They demanded the coming of a visible angel, yet had an angel been sent, judgment would have come immediately, leaving no chance for repentance; and had the angel appeared as a man, it would only have deepened their confusion.

Messengers before were also mocked, and those who ridiculed them were ultimately overtaken by the very consequences they denied. People should reflect on the fate of past deniers by traveling through the land.

All that exists in the heavens and the earth belongs to Allah alone. He has decreed mercy upon Himself and will surely gather all people on the Day of Judgment, about which there is no doubt. Yet those who have lost themselves persist in disbelief. Everything of the night and day belongs to Him, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.

The Prophet ﷺ is commanded to declare that none can be taken as a guardian besides Allah—the Originator of the heavens and the earth, the Provider who needs no provision. Whoever is spared the punishment of the day of judgment, is truly granted Allah’s mercy, and that alone is the greatest success.

Allah alone holds power over harm and blessing; none can remove harm except Him, and He is fully capable of all things. He reigns supreme over His creation with perfect wisdom and awareness.

Allah is affirmed as the greatest Witness between the Holy Prophet ﷺ and the people. The Holy Quran has been revealed as a warning for all whom it reaches. The Holy Prophet ﷺ is commanded to firmly proclaim the Oneness of Allah and to completely reject all false gods associated with Him.

Those who were given the Scripture recognize the Prophet ﷺ as clearly as they recognize their own children, yet those who have destroyed themselves refuse to believe. No one commits a greater wrong than those who fabricate lies against Allah or deny His signs, for such wrongdoers will never succeed.

On the Day when all are gathered, those who associated partners with Allah will be questioned about the gods they claimed. In confusion, they will deny their own polytheism, exposing their falsehood as the fabricated gods they relied upon abandon them completely.

Some pretend to listen to the Holy Quran, yet their hearts are veiled and their ears closed, leaving them unable to understand. Even when confronted with every sign, they persist in disbelief, arguing that the Holy Quran is nothing but ancient tales. They turn others away from the Prophet ﷺ while distancing themselves, harming only their own souls without realizing it.

When they are made to stand before the Fire, they will be overwhelmed with regret, wishing to return to the world to believe and obey. But their remorse comes only after hidden truths are laid bare; even if sent back, they would return to the same denial. Truly, they are false in their claims.

The deniers insist that there is no life beyond this world and no resurrection. Yet when they are made to stand before their Lord, they will be forced to acknowledge the truth of the Hereafter and taste the consequences of their disbelief. Truly lost are those who deny meeting Allah until the Hour overtakes them suddenly; burdened by their sins, they will cry out in regret for what they neglected. This worldly life is nothing but play and passing amusement, while the eternal Home of the Hereafter is far better for those who are mindful of Allah—will they not reflect?

Allah reassures the Holy Prophet ﷺ that their words grieve him, yet they do not deny his truthfulness; rather, they reject Allah’s signs. Many messengers before him were also rejected and persecuted, but they remained patient until Allah’s help arrived, for His promise never fails.

Even if the Holy Prophet ﷺ were to seek extraordinary means to bring them a sign, guidance rests solely with Allah. Had He willed, all would have believed—so he is reminded not to grieve over what lies beyond his control. Only those who truly listen will respond, while those spiritually dead will be raised by Allah and returned to Him. Though they demand further signs, Allah has full power to send them, yet most remain unaware.

All creatures that walk upon the earth and all birds that soar in the sky form communities like humanity. Nothing has been left out of Allah’s perfect Record, and all will ultimately be gathered before their Lord.

Those who deny Allah’s signs choose blindness and silence, wandering in darkness. Guidance belongs to Allah alone—He allows whom He wills to stray and guides whom He wills to the Straight Path.

The Holy Prophet ﷺ is asked to remind them: when faced with overwhelming punishment or the coming of the Hour, would they call upon anyone besides Allah? In truth, it is Allah alone whom they turn to, and if He wills, He removes their hardship—yet once relief comes, they forget the false gods they once associated with Him.

Messengers were sent before, and people were tested with hardship so they might humble themselves. Instead, their hearts hardened, and Satan made their deeds appear pleasing. When they ignored all warnings, Allah opened the doors of worldly blessings for them—until, at the height of their pride, He seized them suddenly, leaving them in utter despair. Thus the wrongdoers were completely uprooted. All praise belongs to Allah, the Lord of all worlds.

The Holy Prophet ﷺ is instructed to ask the people to reflect: if Allah were to take away their hearing, sight, or seal their hearts, who besides Allah could restore them? Despite the signs being presented in many ways, they continue to turn away. And if Allah’s punishment were to come suddenly or gradually, none would be destroyed except the wrongdoers.

Messengers are sent only to give glad tidings and to warn. Those who believe and do righteous deeds will have no fear or grief, while those who deny Allah’s signs will face punishment for their defiance.

The Prophet ﷺ is commanded to clarify that he claims no divine treasures, no knowledge of the unseen, and no angelic status—he only follows what is revealed to him. Those who are blind to the truth are not equal to those who see; this is an invitation to reflect.

Through the Quran, the Holy Prophet ﷺ is to warn those who are mindful of the Day they will be gathered before their Lord, when no protector or intercessor will avail them except Allah alone, so that they may grow in God-consciousness.

The Holy Prophet ﷺ is instructed not to dismiss the poor believers who call upon their Lord morning and evening, seeking His pleasure. He is not accountable for them, nor are they for him, and dismissing them would be unjust. Some are tested through others, leading disbelievers to question Allah’s favor—but Allah knows best who is truly grateful. When believers come, the Holy Prophet ﷺ is to greet them with peace and remind them that Allah, Most Merciful, forgives those who err in ignorance or recklessness and then repent. This clarifies Allah’s signs and distinguishes the righteous from the wicked.

The Holy Prophet ﷺ is commanded to affirm the worship of Allah alone and to refuse following the desires of those who associate others with Him, for to do so would lead astray. He must also remind people that hastening Allah’s punishment is beyond his power; only Allah decides its time, and He is the Best of Judges, fully aware of the wrongdoers.

Allah alone holds the keys of the unseen and knows all that exists on land and sea; nothing occurs—no leaf falls, no seed is hidden, nothing green or dry escapes His knowledge—and all is recorded perfectly. He takes back souls each night, knows deeds by day, and revives each person until their appointed term is complete. Death is met by His angels without fail, and every soul is ultimately returned to Allah, the True Master, whose judgment is final and swift.

The Prophet ﷺ is instructed to remind people that it is Allah alone who rescues them from the darkest moments on land and at sea, the One they call upon in humility, secretly and openly, promising gratitude if saved. Yet many associate others with Him in worship, forgetting that He alone can relieve every distress, send punishment from above or below, or cause divisions among them. Allah presents these signs in varying ways so that they may reflect and comprehend.

Despite this, many still reject the Holy Quran, though it is the truth. The Holy Prophet ﷺ is not their keeper; every matter unfolds in its destined time, which they will soon witness. He is also guided not to sit, unless necessary,  with those who ridicule the revelations , and to remind that the mindful of Allah are not accountable for mockers—they can only advise, hoping some will turn away from wrongdoing.

Those who treat faith as a game or are deluded by worldly life are warned through the Holy Quran: no ransom or intercessor will save them from ruin, and they will face severe punishment for their disbelief.

The Holy Prophet ﷺ is to emphasize that invoking powerless idols after receiving Allah’s guidance leads only to being lost like devils misguiding the disoriented, even as others call them to guidance. True guidance belongs solely to Allah. All are commanded to submit to Him, establish prayer, and be mindful of Him, for to Him all will return. He is the Creator of the heavens and the earth, and on the Day of Judgment, His command of “Be” brings all into existence. His authority is absolute, and He is the Knower of all, seen and unseen, the All-Wise, All-Aware.

Remember when the prophet Abraham (A.S) spoke to his father, Azar, saying, “Do you take idols as gods? It is clear that you and your people are misguided.” Allah showed prophet Abraham (A.S) the wonders of the heavens and the earth to strengthen his faith. Observing the star, the moon, and the sun, he recognized that none of these could be his Lord, and he declared to his people that he completely rejected all they associated with Allah in worship. He turned wholly to the One who originated the heavens and the earth, affirming, “I am not one of the polytheists.”

When his people argued, the prophet Abraham (A.S) replied that he feared none of their idols while they associated others with Allah, whose knowledge encompasses all. True security and guidance belong only to those who are faithful and free from falsehood. This was the reasoning Allah granted Abraham (A.S) in his debate with his people, elevating whomever He wills in rank, for He is All-Wise and All-Knowing.

Allah blessed Ibrāhīm (A.S.) with Isḥāq (A.S.) and Ya‘qūb (A.S.), guiding them just as He had guided Nūḥ (A.S.) and his descendants, including Dāwūd (A.S.), Sulaymān (A.S.), Ayyūb (A.S.), Yūsuf (A.S.), Mūsā (A.S.), and Hārūn (A.S.), rewarding those who were righteous. Likewise, Allah guided Zakariyyā (A.S.), Yaḥyā (A.S.), ‘Īsā (A.S.), Ilyās (A.S.), Ismā‘īl (A.S.), Al-Yasa‘ (A.S.), Yūnus (A.S.), and Lūṭ (A.S.), favoring them above their contemporaries. From among their forefathers, descendants, and brothers, Allah also chose and guided many to the Straight Path, demonstrating His mercy and wisdom in honoring and rewarding the righteous.

This is Allah’s guidance, granted to whomever He wills among His servants. Associating others with Him nullifies one’s good deeds. Allah gave the Scripture, wisdom, and prophethood to those chosen, and if others reject the message, it is entrusted to people who will faithfully uphold it. These prophets were rightly guided, and their guidance is to be followed. The Holy Prophet ﷺ asks no reward for conveying the Quran—it is a reminder for the whole world.

Many failed to show Allah proper reverence, claiming He revealed nothing to any human. Yet it was He who revealed the Book to the prophet Moses (A.S) as light and guidance, portions of which were later hidden or divided by people. Through the Quran, Allah teaches what neither the Holy Prophet ﷺ nor his forefathers knew, leaving the deniers to pursue their amusements in falsehood.

This blessed Quran confirms previous revelations and serves to warn the people of the Mother of Cities (Makkah) and all around it. Those who truly believe in the Hereafter accept it and guard their prayers, embodying faith through action.

Who does greater wrong than those who lie about Allah, claim false revelations, or claim to produce revelations like His? At the moment of death, the angels will call them to surrender their souls, and they will face the disgraceful torment for their arrogance and lies. They return to Allah alone, leaving behind all worldly ties, and none of their false partners can help them; every claim fails, and every bond is severed.

Allah is the Creator of all: He makes seeds and fruit sprout, brings the living from the dead and the dead from the living, and causes the dawn to break. He has made the night for rest, the sun and moon to travel with precision, and the stars as guides through darkness. He originated all humans from a single soul, assigning them places to live and to be laid to rest, and sends down rain to produce abundant vegetation, fruits, and crops in variety—signs for those who reflect and believe.

Yet people ignorantly associate others with Allah and claim He has sons and daughters. Glorified is He, exalted above such falsehood. Allah, the Originator of the heavens and earth, has no mate, no children, and possesses perfect knowledge of all creation.

That is Allah—your Lord! There is no deity worthy of worship except Him. He is the Creator and Maintainer of all, beyond the grasp of any vision, yet encompassing all that exists. He is Most Subtle, All-Aware.

Allah has sent insights for humanity; those who choose to see benefit themselves, while those who turn away harm only themselves. The Holy Prophet ﷺ is not their keeper, but a guide conveying the truth. The Holy Quran is made clear for those who reflect, and its guidance comes solely from Allah. Follow what has been revealed, worship Allah alone, and turn away from polytheists. Had Allah willed, no one would have associated partners with Him, and the Holy Prophet ﷺ is not responsible for their choices.

Believers are cautioned not to insult others’ false deities, for each people’s deeds are made appealing to them. Ultimately, everyone returns to Allah, who informs them of all they did. Some demand signs, yet even if every miracle were shown—angels, speaking dead, or every proof—they would not believe unless Allah wills, for many remain ignorant.

And so We have made for every prophet enemies—devilish humans and jinn—whispering to one another with elegant words of deception. Had Allah willed, they would not have done so. Leave them to their deceit, for it only confirms the hearts of the disbelievers in their defiance and pleasure in evil, while the truth remains clear for those receptive to guidance.

Say, O Prophet ﷺ, “Shall I seek a judge other than Allah, Who has revealed to you this perfect Book, fully explaining the truth?” Those granted earlier Scriptures recognize its divine origin, so do not doubt. The Word of Allah is perfected in truth and justice; none can alter it, and He is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.

O Prophet ﷺ, most people follow assumptions and falsehood, and if you obeyed them, they would lead you astray. Allah alone knows who is rightly guided. Eat only what is slaughtered in Allah’s Name, and avoid what He has forbidden, except in necessity. Many are misled by whims, but Allah knows the transgressors. Avoid all sin, whether open or hidden, for those who earn wrongdoing will face its consequences. The devils whisper to their human allies to mislead you; following them would make you a polytheist.

Those given life and guidance by Allah are like a light guiding them among people, while the disbelievers remain in darkness from which they cannot emerge. Misdeeds are made appealing to them, and in every community, the most wicked conspire, yet their plots harm only themselves without their awareness.

Whenever signs come to them, some demand the same miracles given to past messengers. Allah knows best where to place His message, and the wicked will face humiliation and severe punishment for their plots.

Whomever Allah guides, He opens their heart to Islam, while those He leaves astray feel constricted, as if struggling to ascend into the sky. This is the fate of the disbelievers. Allah’s Path is perfectly straight, and His signs are clear for those mindful of Him. Those who follow it will find the Home of Peace with their Lord, who will be their Guardian for their deeds.

On the Day of Judgment, Allah will gather humans and jinn together. The jinn who misled humans and their human allies will acknowledge their deeds, but the Fire will be their eternal abode; except for those whom Allah wills to spare. In this way, wrongdoers become destructive allies of one another because of their own misdeeds, while Allah remains All-Wise and All-Knowing.

On the Day of Judgment, Allah will ask humans and jinn if messengers had not come to guide them and warn of this Day. They will confess against themselves, acknowledging their disbelief and how they were deluded by worldly life. Allah sends messengers so that no society is destroyed unaware of the truth.

Each soul will be judged according to its deeds, and Allah is fully aware of all actions. He is Self-Sufficient and Merciful; He could replace creation if He willed, yet what He has promised will come to pass, and none can escape His decree.

Allah warns the Meccan pagans to persist in their ways, for the consequences will soon be clear: wrongdoers will never succeed. Some pagans divided crops and cattle between Allah and idols, committed the grievous sin of killing their own children, and restricted what Allah had provided—all acts of injustice and self-destruction. By attributing false rules to Allah regarding their livestock and crops, and by murdering their children in ignorance, they strayed far from guidance. Allah is All-Wise and All-Knowing, and He will hold them accountable for their falsehoods.

Allah is the Source of all bounties, producing gardens, palm trees, crops, olives, and pomegranates—similar in appearance but unique in taste. We are to enjoy His provisions, give what is due, and avoid waste, for Allah does not love the wasteful.

He has created cattle in pairs—sheep, goats, camels, and oxen—some fit for labour, others for food. Guidance comes from knowledge, not false claims; those who fabricate lies about Allah to mislead are the greatest wrongdoers.

For Muslims, only carrion, flowing blood, swine (flesh of pigs) , and offerings made to other than Allah are forbidden. In cases of necessity, Allah forgives and shows mercy. The Jewish community was given specific dietary guidance, and Allah’s truthfulness remains absolute.

Those who deny His signs face consequences, but His mercy is infinite for those who follow Him. These points emphasizes gratitude, responsible use of Allah’s blessings, and obedience to His commands.

Humankind has been granted free will: polytheists claim they are not responsible for associating partners with Allah; history shows that rejecting the truth leads only to misguidance and punishment. Guidance is Allah’s alone, and no one can produce true knowledge except by His will. Do not follow those who deny His signs, disbelieve in the Hereafter, or set up equals with their Lord.

Allah has clearly outlined what is forbidden: do not associate partners with Him, honor your parents, protect the lives of your children, avoid indecencies, and respect the sanctity of life except by lawful right. Treat orphans and others’ property with justice, give full measure in all dealings, speak truthfully, and fulfill your covenant with Allah.

This is the straight path, perfectly clear. Following it leads to guidance and mindfulness of Allah, while other ways mislead. It is a roadmap for righteous living, grounded in justice, compassion, and devotion.

Allah gave the prophet Moses (A.S) the Torah as a complete guide, mercy, and clarification for those who do good, so they may be certain of meeting their Lord. Likewise, He has revealed the Quran as a blessed Book, a guide and mercy for all who follow it and remain mindful of Him. No one can claim ignorance of earlier scriptures as an excuse, for now a clear proof has come to everyone. Those who deny Allah’s revelations and turn away will face the consequences, while the obedient will be rewarded.

Some await signs or the coming of angels, yet belief at that point will not benefit those who rejected guidance earlier. The Prophet (SAW) is not accountable for those who divide into sects; all judgment rests with Allah, who will inform each soul of its deeds.

Those who perform good deeds will be rewarded manifold, while wrongdoers will face only what they deserve; no one will be treated unjustly. The Prophet (SAW) is guided to the Straight Path, following the faith of the prophet Abraham (A.S), upright and free from polytheism. Every act of prayer, worship, life, and death belongs to Allah alone, the Lord of all worlds, who has no partner, and to Him all submission is due.

Divine justice ensures that no soul bears another’s burden; everyone will be returned to their Lord and held accountable for their actions. Life itself is a test: Allah elevates some over others and entrusts all with responsibilities, so that people are tried by what they have been given. Though swift in punishment, Allah is always All-Forgiving and Most Merciful
