Let the Words Heal: The Growing Practice of Healing Through Listening Therapy among Muslims/ Non-Muslims/ Atheists
In a world where the pursuit of health often focuses solely on medicine, an ancient (freely available) source of healing is quietly reclaiming its place: the Holy Quran. More and more people today are discovering the profound benefits of listening therapy of the Holy Quran, a practice that combines spiritual enrichment with possible physical and psychological benefits for people of all backgrounds, including Muslims, non-Muslims, and even those without any religious beliefs. The Almighty Creator describes the revealed words of the Holy Quran as a source of healing and mercy:
"We send down (stage by stage) of the Qur’an that which is a healing and a mercy ... — Surah Al-Isrāʾ (17:82)
"O mankind! There has come to you an admonition from your Lord, and a healing for what is in your hearts; a guide, and a mercy for the believers"— Surah Yūnus (10:57)
"Say: It is a guide and a healing ...”— Surah Fuṣṣilat (41:44)
These verses not only affirm the spiritual guidance of the Holy Quran but also explicitly highlight its healing power. But what does it mean for a timeless revelation, beyond the constraints of space and time, to cure ailments in the physical world? This is a question modern science is beginning to explore with growing interest.
The Science Behind Listening Therapy
Every verse of the Holy Quran carries within it a profound and perfect healing. Yet, in an age shaped by modern thinking, many hearts seek reassurance through scientific proof and experimental evidence. In response to this search, Quran listening therapy has been examined with special focus on Surah Ar-Rahman, whose name itself reflects the boundless mercy of Allah, The Most Gracious. The present article focuses on the ways whereby Makhdoom Syed Safdar Ali Bukhari (Rahmatullah Alayh ) introduced a unique journey of healing through his research in this regard. His dedicated exploration eventually led him to introduce the remarkably effective influence of the Quranic radiations rooted in the calming and profound verses of Surah Al-Rahman.
The outcomes of these observations are deeply moving and truly remarkable, reaffirming the timeless wisdom and compassionate healing found within the divine words. Experts in Asian countries and beyond have begun exploring how repeated, focused listening can influence the brain, cellular activity, and even recovery from the last stages of serious diseases (including the last stages of cancer and the other diseases). In seminars bringing together heart surgeons, ICU specialists, molecular biologists, and spiritual leaders, evidence is emerging that the vibration/rhythm, and sacred meaning of the Quranic words have measurable benefits for human health.
One remarkable story comes from Dr. Muhammad Javed Ahmed, an ICU consultant, whose life and work exemplify the power of this therapy. After surviving a life-threatening illness himself—hepatitis and other complications from an accidental exposure to a contaminated syringe—Dr. Javed experienced transformative healing through listening to Surah Ar-Rahman three times a day for seven days. This practice, not only improved his physical condition but also brought inner peace and clarity. Inspired by his own recovery, he implemented this therapy in the ICU, helping patients battling severe illnesses alongside conventional medical treatment.
It has been observed that children under 12 years of age also benefit from listening to Surah Ar-Rahman therapy, but research and reported experiences suggest that it is even more effective when the parents themselves listen to the therapy. Parents are encouraged to forgive everyone, purify their hearts, and release any anger or resentment, because once the heart is free of grudges, the positive effects on the child (under 12)’s health are often reported to be remarkable. During the recitation, one may experience deep emotions—crying, shivering, intense compassion, etc.—which are signs of being spiritually connected to the Creator. Reported experiences suggest that once this connection is established, the healing remarkably occurs in a matter of seconds/ instantaneously.
